Infosys Technologies has been named India's best employer in a study jointly conducted by global management consultancy firm, Hewitt Associates' and Business Today magazine.

The Best Employers in India 2002 is a study that has been conducted for the second consecutive year by Hewitt Associates and Business Today magazine.

The list of top ten best employers consists of four IT companies -- Infosys (No.1), Hewlett Packard India (No.3), Satyam Technologies Service (No.5) and Agilent Technologies (No.6) -- and three fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies -- Procter & Gamble (No.2), Colgate Palmolive (No.9) and Gillette India (No.10).

Smithkline Beecham (No.4) and American Express India (No.8) are the lone companies to represent the pharmaceutical and banking sectors respectively in the top ten. Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) is the only PSU to make it to the top 10 list.

While Reliance took the No.16 position, two Tata group companies -- Tisco (No.12) and Telco (No.25) -- also made it to the top 25. Indian Oil Corporation and Maruti Udyog are the other PSUs to be listed in the ranking.

Hughes Software, Oracle India, Compaq Computer (India), Microsoft Corporation (India) and Polaris Software Labs are some other IT companies to make it to the list. While only 27 per cent participation came from IT companies, almost 40 per cent of these figured in the list. Among other companies are LG Electronics, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Sasken Communication Technologies, Johnson & Johnson and ST Microelectronics.

"The study seeks to identify the best employers in India by analysing leading HR systems and philosophies, and determines how these effectively meet employee needs and drive business results," Ravi Virmani, managing director (South Asia), Hewitt said.

"Best employers have highly satisfied employees who are fully committed to their organisation," he added.

204 companies from more than 15 industry groups participated in the study and data was collected from more than 52,000 employees. 27 per cent participation came from IT companies, while 16-20 per cent came from FMCG and consumer durables sectors. PSU participation represented only two per cent.

The selection of the companies was based on several factors including degree of employee satisfaction, depth and breadth of hr practices and their alignment to business content, Hewitt said.

"The study has shown a strong positive correlation between being a best employer and improved business results. Best employers have better financial results across a range of operational performance measures than competitive organisations," said Virmani.

The study was open to all organisations in India that have been established for a minimum of three years and have not less than 100 white-collar employees.
