Contraceptives major Hindustan Latex Ltd, under fire from the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government on its Crezendo condoms, continues to swear by its genuine intentions of promoting safe sex.

The Kerala-based public sector company's innovative condom variant Crezendo, a three-condom pack with a vibrating ring, has been dubbed a 'sex toy' by the MP government.

Clarifying the position, M Ayyapan, chairman and managing director, Hindustan Latex, told Business Standard that, "Crezendo was launched with the primary objective of addressing the concern over the fall in condom usage. A major reason cited in the various studies was lack of pleasure and the vibrating ring is just a pleasure enhancer. It is primarily meant for encouraging the practice of using condoms for safe sex and birth control. There is nothing unethical or immoral."

In an era where family planning measures and the fight against sexually transmitted diseases demand innovative initiatives, the Crezendo controversy is uncalled for, feel consumers.

"Such a stance taken by the state administration is totally uncalled for. The fact that it comes from a state which houses the Khajuraho temple, is annoying," pointed out a Crezendo customer in Thiruvananthapuram.

Crezendo, meanwhile, has evoked a good response and is being well received, a company official pointed out.

The company has stated that in the likelihood of the MP government not allowing the sale of the product, it was prepared to withdraw it from that state.
