Hiring shows 5% rise in Chennai

Hiring in IT and software sector went up by 12%, compared with the last year

The hiring process in Chennai has seen a slight increase of two per cent in September, 2013, as compared with the hiring levels in the previous month, according to Naukri.com's indicator of job listings, Naukri Job Speak Index. Hiring in IT and software sector went up by 12 per cent, compared with the last year, it added.

The Naukri Job Speak Index of Chennai was at 1070 in September, 2013, which has gone up by two per cent in hiring over the previous month. Moreover, the index has shown an increase in hiring with five per cent rise in September 2013 when compared to the same month of previous year.

ITeS witnessed maximum hiring of professionals with 37 per cent new induction during the month compared to last September, it added. Hiring of professionals in project management, production and engineering segments has seen the highest monthly increase with the index going up by 12 per cent, 11 per cent and nine per cent respectively in September 2013 compared to last month.

However, Pharmaceuticals, one of the major sector for the city, has witnessed decline in hiring by seven per cent on a month on month basis though on a a Year-on-year analysis the sector has seen increase in hiring by seven per cent in September this year, over the same month last year.

Ambarish Raghuvanshi, group president finance and CFO, Info Edge (India) Ltd, said: "Amid the period of slowdown and the downward movement of rupee, the job market has improved marginally. In the September 2013 job index, the effect of the current situation of uncertainty and speculation was evident."

Construction and banking were other sectors showing growth in the range of five to seven per cent in September 2013, compared to August 2013. Auto and telecom sectors saw the highest month-on-month growth, with hiring activity going up by 10 per cent and 14 per cent in September respectively, when compared to the previous month.

Hiring in insurance and oil & gas sectors has gone down by 12 and 13 per cent respectively during the month of September when compared to the previous month.

Hiring of professionals for BPO, HR, accounts and marketing also showed an increase with three to eight per cent to hiring during the month over the last month. Software services has been stable in September, this year, over August, this year, while on a Y-o-Y comparison the sector has gone up by 11 per cent during September this year compared to the same month last year.
