Hindustan Motors (HM) will consider assembling completely-knocked-down (CKD) kits of the Mitsubishi Pajero in the country, based on customer feedback to the vehicle being launched in completely-built-unit (CBU) form in April 2002.

"Initially, we will launch Pajero in the CBU form. If the response is positive, we may assemble knocked-down kits," executive director B K Chaturvedi said here. The vehicle is likely to be priced around Rs 30 lakh, sources said. HM has a technical alliance with Mitsubishi Motors of Japan and currently manufacturers the latter's Lancer in its Chennai factory.

The CK Birla group flagship company today launched HM CNG Plus Engine, its maiden foray into manufacturing of CNG engines.

Targeted at CNG retrofit buses and gensets on CNG fuel mode, these engines have been developed by HM's in-house R&D at the Uttarpara plant. HML's R&D has over the years gathered considerable experience in engine manufacturing by closely working with international players like Mitsubishi and Isuzu.

Chaturvedi said: "We see a huge potential in the CNG engine market as more and more states are opting for eco-friendly fuel options to tackle increasing pollution menace. CNG is not only a cost-effective option but is also a very economical fuel that is easier to maintain and user-friendly. Moreover, production of these engines at our Uttarpara unit will also lead to better utilisation of our plant capacity."

HM will manufacture these engines through a technical collaboration with Green Gas Technologies Ltd, a pioneer in developing indigenous conversion system utilising readily available kit parts and India's first multi-point fuel injection system for buses to the most advance duel fuel system.

The engines are provided with radiator, blower fan, turbo charger, 12 volts for 125 KVA and above, air cleaner, oil filter, exhaust silencer, water temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, starting switch, low oil pressure, high water and oil temperature, over speed protection and an hour meter.

Hindustan Motors Ltd. will initially produce 150 engines per month. However, the production will be spruced up as the demand for the same increases. The engines for genset application are available at a price of Rs 2 lakh and a warranty of 10,000 hours running or one year which ever is earlier. The retrofit for CNG bus engines will be available at a price of Rs 5 lakh, which includes cost of cylinders, piping and minor alterations. The retrofit engines have a warranty for 40,000 km or one year, whichever is earlier, the executives said.
