Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI), the 100 per cent subsidiary of the Honda Motor Company, Japan, announced its plans to launch a 100cc motorcycle by 2010. Currently, the company is present in the 125cc and 150cc motorcycle category only.
HMSI has also set a target of over one million two-wheeler sales for the fiscal 2008-09. Of these, the company expects to sell around seven lakh scooters and three lakh motor cycles.
Commenting that there has been a slowdown in two-wheeler sales, Shinji Aoyama, president and chief executive officer of HMSI said, "We are targeting the 125cc motorcycles category which is the fastest growing segment. We have therefore launched Honda CBF Stunner in this category."
Aoyama added that the company plans to launch a 100cc motorcycle by 2010. "While the 125cc category is growing, demand for 100cc motorcycles in the price range of close to Rs 40,000 is huge. We intend to foray there as well," said Aoyama.
Last year, HMSI sold around 9.07 lakh two-wheelers and held a market share of 11 per cent. Having exported 37,000 units of these in last fiscal, the company aims at exporting over 40,000 units in financial year 2008-09.
