IndiaGen Ltd (IGL) launched its frozen bovine semen for commercial sale at the Hotel Friends Regency last week. |
IGL is a joint venture breeding company of the Indian Immunologicals Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board and one of the top five animal health companies in the country) and the United States' largest cooperative-owned animal breeding company Cooperative Resources International (CRI). |
The frozen semen promises good quality calves that would later on give more milk. The venture is expected to bridge the demand-supply gap for good quality frozen semen in the country. |
This is the first commercial marketing of frozen bovine semen in the country. So far, this has been the domain of government agencies, cooperatives and NGOs providing artificial insemination (AI) services. |
IGL Managing Director P V K Panicker said the company already has a presence in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh and has been providing AI facilities for the last year. |
India is far behind in milk production, compared to other countries. In Israel, average milk production per animal is 31 kg a day, in the USA it is 27 kg, in the Netherlands 26 kg, in Australia 16 kg and in New Zealand 11 kg. In India, a local cow gives 1.92 kg, a cross-bred one 6.53 kg and a buffalo 4.24 kg. |
IGL's frozen bovine semen is being produced at the country's two top ranking semen stations "" Sabarmati Ashram Gaushala in Bidaj near Ahmedabad and Animal Breeding Centre in Salon near Lucknow. |
