International hotel brand the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has entered into a tie up with Adyar Gate Hotels Ltd to launch its Crowne Plaza brand in Chennai.

IHG today said it had signed an agreement with Adyar Gate Hotels Ltd for rebranding the latter’s 286-room property as Crowne Plaza Chennai Adyar Park, an upscale hotel brand catering to business travelers.

Located in the city’s central business district and taking the site of the existing Sheraton Park Chennai, the hotel bears additional significance for IHG as it was originally the site of the company’s first Holiday Inn launched in the 1970s, it said.

Shantha de Silva, head of South West Asia, IHG said Chennai was already one of the largest industrial and commercial centres in the south, and as it grows in prominence as one of the country’s key cultural, economic and educational hubs, there is a great potential for growth in tourism and hospitality.

There are currently eight Crowne Plaza hotels and resorts across India, and five new hotels are due to open in the next three-five years.

IHG has 21 hotels (4,100 rooms) in 13 cities in India across four brands — luxury segment InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express.

The company has 47 hotels under development, including Holiday Inn Express Chennai in Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) and Holiday Inn Chennai OMR Tidel Park, which will open in Chennai within the next three-five years.
