IKEA, the world’s largest home furnishing retailer, met its suppliers, potential customers, government officials and others as part of its recently held workshop "IKEA meets Mumbai".

The day was spent in understanding the needs of people in Mumbai, knowing ways to stimulate the home furnishing market, driving the sustainability agenda in the state and becoming a valuable partner of the community, the retailer said in a release.

"These inputs will enable IKEA to position itself as a unique, trusted and meaningful brand in Maharashtra," the company said in a statement.

IKEA India recently purchased 23 acres’ land in Thane Belapur Road, Navi Mumbai for its first store in Maharashtra. The company expects to generate 500-700 direct employment opportunities.

Juvencio Maeztu, chief executive officer of IKEA India, said, "We are overwhelmed with the enthusiastic participation and insights shared by all the key stakeholders. These insights will help IKEA to have an effective understanding of the local community and build a plan that best complements the needs and aspirations of a progressive Maharashtra. We are excited about our Maharashtra entry, and are confident that together we’ll create a big success."
