On behalf of the Tripura government, IL&FS, along with ITC, has initiated a project to use bamboo for industrial production of agarbattis (incense sticks). |
Currently, the incense stick production is of the order of 20 billion sticks per annum, which is about a quarter of the country's total consumption of this item. |
With its vast resources and preferred quality of bamboo for production of sticks, Tripura is ideally placed to increase its market share. |
However, there has hitherto been little value addition within the state as regards agarbatti manufacturing, said a press release from IL&FS. |
The venture will speed up the development of the industry and provide increased employment opportunities within the state, especially for the tribal population. Concurrently, studies have been commissioned to assess the inputs required for the manufacture of agarbatti, identify the availability of the inputs as well as gaps, and suggest and implement technical improvements through mechanisation of production processes. A vendor has also been identified for setting up of facilities for manufacture, perfuming and packaging of agarbatti, as well as making of machine made bamboo sticks for distribution in the North east region. |
D K Mittal, chief executive, special infrastructure projects cell of IL&FS, said, "the project would result in generation of employment opportunities (direct and indirect) for around 1,000 people and result in increase in productivity and income of the workers engaged in this industry. The project would also enable them to export agarbatti to neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, etc." |
Other than just promoting such initiatives, IL&FS has investments in the infrastructure sector in the form of equity alone amounting to Rs 97 crore apart from many guarantees & undertakings. |
IL&FS works with a number of state governments on specific projects and has developed strong relationships with multilateral and bilateral agencies such as the World Bank, USAID etc and has a $200 million credit line. |
