India has awarded contracts for the supply of nuclear power plant equipment for 10,000 MW facilities being set up in the country to equipment makers in the US.
India is setting up these plants as part of the country’s plans to add about 30,000 MW of nuclear power by 2020, following the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal that allowed the country to enter the nuclear suppliers’ group (NSG).
“As per a Letter of Intent (LoI), India plans to source 10,000 MW of nuclear power equipment from the US makers. It may take time as India is yet to select site and place orders,” said Meena Mutyala, vice-president, India strategy of US based Westinghouse, the largest nuclear equipment maker.
GE Hitachi Nuclear and Westinghouse are the leading nuclear turnkey equipment makers in the world.
