India Inc is poised to record an all-round better performance in the first three months (Jan-March) of 2005 compared with the corresponding period of the previous year, according to Dun & Bradstreet's Business Optimism Index for the country.

The survey also shows that business confidence has risen compared with the last year. Dun & Bradsteet, a leader in providing global business information, releases the index today which shows that all the six optimism indices, namely volume of sales, net profits, selling prices, new orders, inventory levels and employees, have increased over the previous year.

The Dun & Bradsteet business expectation survey for the first three months of this year was conducted in December 2004 when the Indian economy was about to end the calendar year with a high note.

The composite index for Q1 recorded an increase by 28.4 per cent to 138.4 from 107.8 in the corresponding previous quarter.

"The survey findings are in conjunction with the overall sentiment on the Indian economy," Rajesh Mirchandani, chief executive officer, Dun & Bradsteet "" south Asia & Middle East said in the release. However, he cautioned by saying that the survey was conducted before the Tsunami tragedy.

"Going forward, the impact of the Tsunami on the country's economy as well as the Centre's proposals for forthcoming budget would be key factors in determining business confidence over the next quarter," he added.

The optimism indices for sales volume, net profit, selling prices, new orders, inventory level and employees stand at 81 per cent ( a 12 per cent growth over the corresponding previous period), 71 per cent (a 19 percentage points rise), 21 per cent (up by 8 percentage points), 83 per cent (a 6 percentage points gain), 16 per cent (up by 2 per cent) and 42 per cent (a 21 per cent rise), respectively.

For calculating the business optimism index, each of the six parameters assigned weight. The positive responses for every parameter for the period under review are expressed as a proportion of positive responses in the base period of the second quarter (April-June ) of 1999.
