The Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have developed a 24-hour science channel that may go on air by next year.

The channel will be transmitted by Doordarshan and will be available in its direct-to-home (DTH) service.

"We have more than 200 programmes in our bank and by the end of this year, we will have around 400 programmes. Doordarshan has, in principle, agreed to air the channel in its DTH service. And if we get enough programmes on hand, the channel may go on air by next year," Development, educational and communication unit (DECU), ISRO director B S Bhatia told Business Standard.

The science channel is jointly funded by DST and ISRO. Currently, it has a slot in Doordarshan which airs science programmes commissioned by DECU. "Doordarshan airs one of our programmes every week. But soon, we may get three time slots to air these programmes, " he added.

Further, he said that as most science programmes are shown by foreign channels, there is a growing impression that science is a western concept.

Therefore, DST and ISRO came up with the idea of science channel to instill a scientific temper with an Indian perspective. Although DECU has its own in-house producers, most of these programmes are made by producers from outside.

"Most of these programmes are produced by producers from across the country. Derek O Brien will be producing a quiz series for the channel," said S K Subramanya, project manager of science channel management office (SCMO), who looks after the commissioning of programmes.

Talking about the last month announcement made by DST that it will jointly produce 'Science Safari' "" a year long 45 minute programme with National Geographic channel, the director said that ISRO is also open to tie-up with other channels if it receives any proposal.

The science channel will target all age groups. However, the common perception of science channel is that it is for science students and teachers or people with associated to science.
