Japanese automotive manufacturer Isuzu Motors, which is in the process of setting up a Rs 3,000-crore manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh, targets to source the entire product components locally for its production in India.

The company announced it would kick start works at Sri City on the AP-Tamil Nadu border with a ground-breaking ceremony on January 27. According to Isuzu, the facility would be operational in 2016 with a capacity to produce 50,000 units, which would be raised to 120,000 units by 2020. Besides, it would generate direct employment for 2,000 individuals.

It is importing ready-to-take off sports utility vehicle (SUV) and pick up trucks from its facility in Thailand, to market them in the Indian market. “The upcoming Rs 3,000 crore facility would allow us to achieve full-scale (100 per cent) local manufacturing by 2018,” said Takashi Kikuchi, president and managing director, Isuzu Motors India, adding this would help it to market its offerings at competitive prices.

According to its India road map plan, the company would focus on pick-up truck and SUV segments in the country to boost sales besides establishing a presence across 60 dealership points in India by 2016. It has three touch points in Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Chennai. Plans are afoot to launch itself in Bangalore, Kochi, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam this month.

Isuzu India so far has sold 200 fully-imported SUVs and pick-up trucks in India. “We’re studying the Indian market to bring our entire portfolio covering light commercial vehicles (CVs), intermediate CVs here,” said Shigeru Wakabayashi, deputy managing director, Isuzu India.

Recently, the company here launched its first India-assembled sports utility vehicle MU-7 under a licensed  agreement with Hindustan Motors Ltd (HML) at latter’s  plant near Chennai.

The premium seven-seater MU-7 is powered with a 3-litre turbo-charged diesel engine and has a 3-meter wheel base, making it the one of the longest SUVs available in India. It is priced at Rs 22.6 lakh (ex-showroom in Hyderabad).
