Communications services provider British Telecom (BT) today announced the appointment of Jeff Kelly as the chief executive officer of its Global Services division with immediate effect.

Kelly took over the charge from Hanif Lalani who has been serving BT since 26 years and is leaving the company to pursue personal business interests, BT said in a statement.

Lalani will step down from the board with immediate effect and will stay with BT till March-end to assist smooth transition of responsibilities, it added.

Kelly's task will be to help BT Global Services realise its potential as a leading provider of managed networked services, it said.

Kelly has close to 25 years of IT services experience at the Global IT services firm, EDS, where he ran the firm's $10 billion business in America.

"Hanif took over as the CEO of Global Services at a difficult time for the division... We are very grateful to Hanif for his hard work in achieving this," BT CEO Ian Livingston said.
