Jeypore Sugar targets to crush 12 lakh tonnes of sugarcane

Jeypore Sugar Company Limited, the Rs 200-crore group based at Chagallu in West Godavari district produced 10.76 lakh quintals (620 bags) of sugar in the fiscal ended March 31, 2005.

In 2004-05, the company crushed 9.27 lakh tonnes of sugarcane as compared to 8.51 lakh tonnes in 2003-04. It aims to crush 12 lakh tonnes of sugarcane in 2005-06.

Apart from producing sugar, Jeypore Sugar has established two distilleries and a power generation plant. The company's power plant earned a revenue of Rs 2.43 crore for the year 2004-05.

Set up at a cost of Rs 34 crore, the plant produces 13.5 mw of power and exports it to the Southern Power Grid. This fiscal, the company is expanding the existing capacity of its distillery from 20,000 to 40,000 kilolitres per day at a cost of Rs 7 crore. In 2002-03, it invested Rs 12 crore on upgrading technology of its plant.

The company is making optimum utilisation of sugarcane and its by-products by establishing industries downstream and providing direct and indirect employment to a number of people.

"We have made optimum utilisation of molasses, rectified spirit, extra-neutral alcohol and ethanol," P Trimurtulu, managing director, Jeypore Sugar, told Business Standard.

Of the 40,000 farmers registered with the company, about 10,000 farmers are supplying sugarcane. The company pays Rs 950 per tonne to the farmers inclusive of benefits like exemption of purchase tax by the state government.
