Reliance Jio is going ahead with its trial programme, despite its ongoing battle with incumbents. The company, which intends to launch data services in India at rates which are cheaper-than-the-cheapest, has opened a limited window to sell personal WiFi or 'MiFi' devices to consumers at Rs 2,899.
Launched under its trial programme, the device will come with a three-month free data package just the way it has been bundling the data services with its Lyf handsets and some other devices.
The company has so far offered the devices only to employees. However, unlike for Lyf handsets that were available to every employee, employees could only acquire one MiFi device against their identity card. So far the company has 30,000 employees using the service and at a given time more than 10 devices can connect to the MiFi device to access high speed broadband services. These devices are available at the Reliance Digital Stores. The company has relied on employees and their experience to popularise the product and speeds. The experience of employees are recorded and the videos are put on Twitter.
