JSPL commissions 2 MTPA steel plant in Oman

The steel facility, using state-of-art technology from Danielli Italy, is Oman's first and largest steel melting shop and also the third largest unit of Middle East and Gulf Region

Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) has commissioned a 2 million tonne per annum (MTPA )integrated steel plant in Oman with an investment of around $800 million. Jindal Shadeed Iron & Steel, a wholly owned subsidiary of JSPL, also has a 1.8MTPA DRI plant in Oman, which has been operational for the last two years, the company said in a statement.

The steel facility, using state-of-art technology from Danielli Italy, is Oman's first and largest steel melting shop and also the third largest unit of Middle East and Gulf Region. Jindal Shadeed has invested over $ 800 million in this integrated facility.

The plant has been commissioned in 23 months from the date of commencement of the sitework. Naveen Jindal, Chairman of JSPL, said,  "The plant will not only meet the growing steeldemand of Oman but would also cater to the needs of entire Gulf region and Middle East."

JSPL had acquired Shadeed Iron and Steel's 1.5 MTPA Gas-based HBI plant in 2010 at $500 million. This facility supports the strong demand for steel in the Middle Eastand North African countries, which has a supply shortfall estimated at more than 12 million tonnes. JSPL has an installed steel capacity of 3 MTPA steel at Raigarh in Chhattisgarh.

Besides, it has setup a 0.6 MTPA wire rod mill and a 1.0 MTPA capacity bar mill at Patratu, Jharkhand, a medium and light structural mill at Raigarh, Chhattisgarh and a1.5 MTPA steel melting shop and a plate mill to produce up to 5.00-metre- wideplates at Angul, Odisha.
