The state-run Nuclear Power Corporation on Saturday commissioned the indigenously developed 220 Megawatt (Mw) Unit 4 of the Kaiga atomic power station. With this, the 20th nuclear power plant becomes operational, taking the total nuclear power capacity to 4,780 Mw. Three units of Kaiga, which are up and running, have a generation capacity of 220 Mw each. Kaiga-4 was built a few years ago but was unable to start power production for want of fuel. India’s exemption from the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group guidelines in 2008 facilitated its return to global nuclear trade, thus making fuel access possible.
