Riding on better cement price realisations, the Rs 146-crore Kakatiya Cement Sugar & Industries Limited has managed to bring down losses in its cement division from Rs 2.42 crore in the financial year 2002-03 to Rs 96 lakh for 2003-04.

The company's sugar division though reported lower bottomline numbers on reduced sugarcane crushing volumes.

The cement division of the company increased output marginally in 2003-04 at 2,84,105 tonnes as compared to 2,83,802 tonnes in the previous fiscal.

The sugar division crushed 2,60,836 tonnes of sugarcane for the current season as against 4,56,307 tonnes in 2002-03. The recovery rate was 9.89 per cent as compared to 10.29 per cent in the previous year. The profit of the sugar division came down from Rs 1.26 crore in 2002-03 to Rs 83.40 lakh in 2003-04.

The company, which has a cogen power plant, has seen realisations from power sale to APTransco come down and this has also affected the profits from the power division. Profits in the division have come down from Rs 7.96 crore in 2002-03 to Rs 6.85 crore in 2003-04.

The management has in its annual report indicated that in the first three months of the current fiscal the production of cement was higher at 76,853 tonnes as compared to 74,635 tonnes in the comparative three months of the last fiscal.

The company has pointed out that deficient rainfall in the last couple of years has affected sugarcane production and hence the availability of sugarcane for crushing.

However, the company noted that the better price realisations of sugar and molasses, which is expected to continue for some more time, would help the company.

An area of worry for the company is the recent downward revision in power tariffs by APTransco, which is also expected to have an adverse affect on the profitability of the division. The company has reported a marginally lower net profit of Rs 6.71 crore for 2003-04 as compared to Rs 6.79 crore in 2002-03.

The turnover of the company increased from Rs 136.55 crore in 2002-03 to Rs 146.32 crore in 2003-04. The company has announced a dividend of Rs 2 per equity share for the year ended March 31, 2004, aggregating an amount of Rs 1.55 crore.
