Kinetic Engineering (KEL) is in talks to manufacture motorcycles for South Korea's Hyosung Corporation at its Ahmednagar plant. |
The two companies are expected to finalise an arrangement in this regard within a month. |
"Hyosung'sAquilla 250 motorcycle is currently being manufactured in Korea. It is assembled in India from CKD kits imported from Hyosung. We are looking at becoming a manufacturing hub for the Korean company. We may need to make some changes in our plant for this," said Sulajja Firodia Motwani, joint managing director of KEL. |
Kinetic is unlikely to need major investments for the initiative, while Hyosung will benefit from low cost of production, she said. |
The outsourcing deal, she said, will also add to the company's bottomline. The twin-engined cruiser motorcycle which spits out 26 bhp, is among the costliest motorcycles in India carrying a price-tag of Rs 1.75 lakh. |
"We had earlier imported 200 CKD units of Aquilla. In the second phase, we imported 100 bikes and now there is a demand for 5,000-odd Aquillas here," Firodia said. |
She said that the company is trying to maintain the bike's exclusivity and is therefore not going for mass imports. |
If Hyosung makes Ahmednagar its manufacturing hub for Aquilla, KEL expects to push for more motorcycle sales. |
Hyosung is one of the top 10 conglomerates of South Korea with an annual turnover in excess of Rs 18,000 crore and manufactures a range of two-wheelers of up to 1100cc capacity. |
Sharing the business strategy for the next fiscal, she said the Laser bike, which has clocked sales of 1,500 units in metros since launch, will be rolled out across the country during this month. |
"We are planning to sell Laser in Ahmedabad, Indore, Hyderabad and Jaipur among other cities by this month-end. We are targeting average sales of 1,200-1,500 bikes a month for the next one year. In the executive segment, our focus will be on Velocity," she said. |
A new nationwide campaign for Laser will be launched soon. But, according to Motwani, KEL will not launch any new motorcycle model during the next fiscal. |
