Kolkata-based Subhas Projects and Marketing (SPML) is floating a special purpose vehicle for solid waste management project in New Delhi. |
Subhas Sethi , vice chairman and managing director of SPML, claimed that the solid waste management project in Delhi would be first of its kind among the metros in India. |

"It will be like a pilot project for waste management in the country. If it is successful then we shall look for such projects in other metro and semi metros like Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune etc," he said. |

Incidentally, the company posted a net profit of Rs 3.75 crore in 2004-05 compared to Rs 28 lakh in 2003-04. Sales also rose from Rs 120.5 crore in 2003-04 to Rs 229 crore in 2004-05. |

Sethi informed that the SPV floated for the purpose was christened Delhi Waste Management. Subhas Projects is entering into technical tie up with US based Tetrapech for knowhow. |

Besides, Tetrapech is picking up 7 per cent stake in the SPV. Elaborating on rollout plans, Sethi said that the company would star off with south, north and east Delhi and would invest around Rs 20 crore for logistics and garbage containers. |

"We have a contract of seven years for waste management in the capital. This includes collecting the waste from the households and then dump it at a design location. We have to do this on a 24-hour basis," he said. |

According to Sethi, SPML is planning to tie up with the NGOs for the project. "NGOs will give training to the general households on how to dispose the garbage. We will have big containers in every mahallas," he added. |

Sethi also informed that a Delhi based company called Dooars would look into the logistics of the project. "It will also have a stake in the SPV," he added. Sethi was optimistic that the SPV could generate revenue of Rs 60 crore in the first year. |

"The payment will be made on volume of garbage disposed. We are expecting 1,500-1,800 tonne per day, which is likely to be increased later," he added. |
