Kurlon Ltd, a part of the Rs 2,400 crore Manipal Group, founded by the Pai group of Manipal, is planning to set up export-oriented units (EOUs) in Sri Lanka and Dubai by the end of this year. |
The company came into existence in 1962 and was then called Karnataka Consumer Products Ltd and from 1995 onwards, the company has been renamed as Kurlon Ltd. |

"We are planning to set up our export oriented units in Sri Lanka and Dubai by the year end. Sri Lanka has tremendous potential because of the availability of cheap raw materials and Dubai has over 30 per cent of the Indian population," Sudhakar Pai, managing director, Kurlon, told Business Standard. |

The rubberised coir industry has grown enormously in the last four decades. Kurlon has grown from a turnover of Rs 31 lakh in 1963-64 to Rs 151 crore in 2003-04. Today the rubberised coir mattress industry is worth over Rs 300 crore in the organised sector which includes mattresses, cushions and moulded seats. |

The total market for branded rubberised coir mattress is estimated to grow to over Rs 350 crore in the next five years, while Kurlon is expected to grow to a Rs 300 crore company. |

At present, the company has four manufacturing units, one in Orissa and Tamil Nadu each, two at Bangalore and a hub at New Delhi. The company has created direct employment over 1,000 people and indirect employment to lakhs of coir workers across the sub-continent. |

Kurlon is the brand leader in the segment and has acquired major market share. |

With its two new EOUs, the company plans to increase its exports to over 30 per cent of its turnover in the next one year by exporting to countries in the Middle East such as Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Oman, and Saarc countries such as Maldives, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. |

The company also has been negotiating for export to Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, Jordan, Palestine, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, UK, US, Austria, Canada, Argentina, Seychelles, Cyprus, Mauritius, New Zealand amongst others. |
