The gauge conversion (GC) of Palanpur-Gandhidam section by the Kutch Railway Company Ltd (KRC) will cut down freight charges by Rs 15 lakh a day for transporters.

KRC is a joint venture of Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) and conceived with the equity participation from Kandla Port Trust (26 percent), Gujarat Adani Ports Ltd (20 per cent) and Government of Gujarat (4 per cent).

"Freight charges will be reduced by Rs 1.5 lakh a train. As 10 trains operate either ways in this route on a daily basis, freight charges will be saved by Rs 15 lakh," Yogendra Sharma, managing director, said.

He also said customers, who currently freight their materials from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Mumbai, can save about one-third transport charges when GC of 223 km Bhildi-Samdari is completed.

"The distance from JNPT to Luhiana is 1750 km. After the completion of GC of Palanpur-Samakhiali and Bhildi-Samdari, the distance between Ludhaina and Kandla or Mundra will be reduced from 1500 km to 1200 km. So transportation charges will be one-third less if a transporter chooses Mundra or Kandla port," he added.

Following the GC of Palanpur-Samakhiali, the Kutch rail shall reduce the distance by over 70 kms and with abundant line capacity it shall have advantage over road.

The connectivity shall also bring incremental freight traffic to the railways, he said.

Operations in the 248 km Palanpur to Samakhiali converted route will get operational by the first week of April. In the second phase, the remaining 53 km from Samakhiali to Gandhidam is expected to be completed by December.

He also said the company will announce a public issue around the third quarter after the completion of the first phase of the GC work.

The company, he said, has also submitted a concession agreement to the ministry of railways for execution of the 223 kms GC of Bhildi - Samdari section of North Western Railway.

An MoU in this effect, was signed last month by its joint venture members - Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd, Kandla Port Trust, Gujarat Adani Ports Ltd and the Government of Gujarat.
