L&T's port in Tamil Nadu gets customs nod

It will soon be ready for EXIM trade

The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) has given notification declaring Larsen and Toubro's Kattupalli port near Chennai as a transhipment facility and soon it will be ready for EXIM trade.

Mala Srivatsav, chief commissioner of Customs, Chennai said that the port was notified for transshipment already and soon it will be notified for Export and Import soon.

She was talking at the sidelines of Open House Meet with the Commerce Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India.

Larsen & Toubro, in association with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd, is setting up a shipyard-cum-port at Kattupalli, about 32 km north of Chennai.

It may be noted, the Rs. 4,675-crore project is being implemented by L&T Shipbuilding Ltd. Though the facility was almost ready since January 2012, officials could not commence operations as they were waiting for Customs notification.

The project comes between the two major ports— Chennai and Ennore .
