Local PC vendors struggling against MNCs: StudyBS Reporter / Mumbai September 19, 2007Indian personal computer (PC) brands are being overtaken by multinational corporation (MNC) PC brands in terms of sales, growth rates and marketing activities. Indian PC players like HCL, Zenith, Wipro and PCS accounted for only 14% of the Indian desktop PC market and 6% the Indian mobile-PC (laptop) market in the first half of 2007, according to a Gartner report. Only HCL withstood the competition, but is losing out to MNCs in the consumer segment. The Indian PC landscape is divided among three different groups: MNCs, local brands and white box (assembled) vendors. Over the past few years, although local brands are growing at a steady pace, they are way behind the growth rates of the MNC brands. Consider this. PC shipments from Indian vendor grew 18% year-over-year in 2006 and 35% y-o-y in 2005, while MNC shipments grew 73% and 50% in 2006 and 2005 respectively.Diptarup Chakraborti, principal research analyst for Gartner
