Auto major Mahindra & Mahindra today said it will double the production of its small tractor Yuvraj, dubbed as the Nano of the farm sector, as it looks at a national roll-out next year.
Priced at Rs 1.75 lakh, the 15 horse power tractor was launched targetting to upgrade farmers who are still relying on bullocks.
"At present the Yuvraj is available only in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Now we are test marketing in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh," M&M Farm Equipment Sector Vice-President Marketing Sanjeev Goyal told PTI.
He said the company will make the Yuvraj available nationwide by next year. In eight months since the launch the firm has so far sold about 4,000 units, he added.
"The market response has been good and therefore we are increasing the production of the vehicle to 1500 units per month from the current 750 units," Goyal said.
M&M has outsourced the production of the tractor to Rajkot-based P M Diesel.
On the overall sales prospects of the company for the fiscal, he said: "The industry has been growing at around 20 per cent this year and we expect to be better than that."
He said M&M's two tractor brands, Mahindra and Swaraj, command 42 per cent share in the Indian tractor market that is estimated to be 4.7 lakh units this year.
As it looks to strengthen its hold in the country's farm equipment sector, the company has also initiated the Mahindra Samriddhi India Agri Awards to recognise the best practices in Indian agriculture.
The award will have six categories, including Farmer of the Year in both male and female categories and lifetime achievement in recognition of contribution in the field agriculture. These will be given in February next year.
