Mahesh Edible Oil Industries Ltd, a Rs 250-crore ISO-certified company manufacturing and marketing mustard oil with the brand name "Saloni", opened its fourth mustard oil unit in Shamshabad town, about 35 km from Agra.

Inaugurated by the UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday, the unit is expected to increase the production of mustard oil in the company by another 25 percent. The company was presently producing about 500 metric tonnes of mustard oil every day.

Yadav said the UP government was seeking to promote the small and mid-scale industries by providing them with better facilities and exposure to the international market and he had offered Mahesh Edible Oil Industries Ltd. (MEOIL) to enter the oil export business with government aid.

According to the Chief Minister, it was quite surprising how fast the company had established yet another full-fledged oil production unit after setting up its third unit just a year back, which indicated that the oil business offered quite significant business prospects if tapped properly.

Later, talking to the mediapersons, Shiv Kumar Rathore, MD, MEOIL said that the Saloni brand mustard oil had been launched in 1991 and since then, it had become the largest mustard oil production company in the entire Asian continent, with an ISO cetification. Presently, he said, the company had an annual turnover of Rs. 250 crores and it was expected to touch Rs. 350 crores this year with the production starting at the fourth unit.

At present, he said, there were about 1000 distributors of the company in the country besides over 100 thousand retailers dealt through 32 oil depots established in different states of the country.

Now, he said, the target of the company is to make "Saloni" the largest FMCG brand in the country by making the people aware of the fact that mustard oil was a "healthier" food supplement compared to refined oil.

As the first step, the company has decided to make its brand known in the metropolitan cities besides the international market where it shall enter through online marketing through the internet and hopefully, within the next 5-10 years, the Saloni brand oil shall be worth over Rs 500 crore.
