Mayfair Hotels & Resorts, which operates the Mayfair chain of luxury hotels in various parts of the country, will open its latest resort at Gopalpur-on-Sea for commercial operations from December 9.

The sprawling resort-Mayfair Palm Beach Resort, the eighth property of Odisha-based Mayfair Group, is equipped with all facilities of a luxury hotel, spread over eleven acres of land. The resort, at present, has 32 rooms.

In addition to the existing facilities, Mayfair Group plans to add a tennis court and golf course to the resort.

The genesis of the resort dates back to 1942 when Singnor Maglioni, an Italian, had set up the first beach resort at Gopalpur. The resort was later sold to the Oberois. This resort was the third property of the Oberoi Group after Shimla and Kolkata. The hospitality major was operating the resort since 1947 before shutting it down in 2005 due to maintenance problems.

The Mayfair Group acquired this heritage property from the Oberoi Group in September 2011 and decided to renovate it, said Mayfair Group chairman and managing director Dilip Ray.

“Mayfair Group had acquired the property from Oberoi Group at around Rs 10-crore. We have invested around Rs 30 crore to revamp the old hotel,” Ray told Business Standard.
