Mirc Electronics, the manufacturer of Onida brand of television, has entered into a strategic partnership with the US-based communications and consumer silicon solutions provider, Marvell, to introduce the Qdeo video processing technology in India.

Qdeo, developed by Marvell, delivers natural video, free of artifacts and noise, enhances the colour and scales all video inputs into a high-definition format.

Initially, the company plans to adopt the technology in its yet-to-be- launched 42-inch LCD televisions and later introduce it in other categories such as DVD players, hand-held video- game consoles and digital wall frames.

Gullu Mirchandani, chairman, Mirc Electronics, said, "The Xaria range is the first indigenously manufactured LCDs in India. The company's in-house team worked on the research and development, while Marvell developed the chips in Bangalore."

He further said Mirc would be the first company to introduce Qdeo in the Indian consumer electronics segment. Mirchandani said, "The company wanted to enter the LCD segment with a customised offering for India, better than the multinationals, with an effective spare parts and after-sales service support."

Globally, the $2.23 billion Marvell features the Qdeo technology in other consumer electronics such as blue ray/HD-DVD players and receivers and has now extended it to LCDs. Refusing to reveal the investments, Mirc executives said the LCDs had taken a year to develop from design to manufacturing. The company invests 5 per cent of the turnover in research and development.

Initially, Mirc Electronics is targeting 10,000 pieces per month with an eye on about 10-15 per cent of the Indian LCD market.

"LCDs have entirely captured the Japanese market, while they have a dominant presence in the US and European markets. The share of cathode ray televisions is steadily declining in India with LCDs expected to register 100 per cent growth for the next five years," said Mirchandani.

The company intends to introduce Qdeo-enabled LCD televisions in the Gulf region and is doing a feasibility study on the European market.
