Mizoram government wants to see faster modernisation work at the Aizwal airport in order to improve connectivity and boost trade relations with neighbouring states.
Despite having huge potential in hydel power, agriculture and horticulture, Mizoram had failed to attract much investments because of insurgency and connectivity issues.
The government thus wants speedy implementation of airport modernisation project, road and railway connectivity.
“We expect to see faster modernisation work at the Aizawl Airport which will help launch cargo services to the region on a commercial basis," said Lt. Gen (Retd) M.M. Lakhera, Governor of Mizoram. The runway at the Aizwal airport is situated on a valley between mountains and leads to climatic hazards.
The road connectivity is also limited to the narrow Siliguri corridor.
The Kaladan multi-modal transport project is expected to boost the road connectivity and the airport modernisation project the air cargo traffic.
As part of the modernisation project, a new Instrument Landing System (ILS) will be installed at the airport to facilitate landing of aircraft. The newly-installed ILS will provide better information on deviation of the aircraft besides improving the visibility limits. The facility is currently being installed and is expected to be ready in a month, said Lakhera on the sidelines of a conference organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce.
