State-run trading firm MMTC will award tenders for the import of 12.5 million tonnes of coal for NTPC in the next 8-10 days, a senior government official said.
"MMTC is likely to award the much delayed tender for the import of 12.5 million tonnes of coal on behalf of NTPC in the next 8-10 days," Power Secretary H S Brahma told reporters here on the sidelines of 'India Power forum'.
Earlier, MMTC had floated the tender for import of coal for NTPC, which was later scrapped. Following this, a fresh tender for the purpose was floated recently.
The total coal requirement of NTPC during the current fiscal is around 150 million tonnes.
Since the imported coal has a high calorific value, 12.5 million tonnes of the imported dry fuel would be equivalent to around 19 million tonnes of domestic coal.
