Sai Kripa Sugar Mills Pvt Ltd has planned to invest Rs 150 crore in Madhya Pradesh to set up an industrial chemicals unit. The Delhi-based group will complete the project next year.

"The unit will come up as a sugar complex in Khamghat near Barman in Narsinghpur district," a company official told Business Standard.

The project will also co-generate 8 Mw power in the complex. If the project takes shape, it will be the first ethanol-producing unit in the state. Ethanol is mixed with diesel and petrol. The company wants 200 acres in Khamghat for the project.

The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government to seek facilities on government process. "We just want land and clearance for documents related with the process," said the official.

The project will generate approximately 600 direct jobs and 3,000-4,000 indirect jobs. It may also offer water to the sugarcane growers if needed while it will supply water to state electricity board from its 8 MW power plant during non-seasonal period.

"We are expecting to run this plant for at least 8-9 months continuous operations each year," BS Bhaktiya, executive director of the company said adding, "the complex will consume 2,500 tonnes of sugarcane per day."

Madhya Pradesh has 11 sugar mills with none producing an important industrial chemical like ethanol. Further the problem of plenty put sugarcane growers in problem this year.

The state produced 250,000 tonne of additional sugarcane this year still 4000 hectares of sugarcane farms remained untouched. Sugar production is seasonal industry, crushing of sugarcane normally lasts till April end each year.

However, the state government asked all sugar mills to operate till May 31 this year to crush the surplus stock. If Sai Kripa sugar complex takes shape, the main sugar-growing belt of Narsinghpur will be able to fetch proper return on their yield.
