The fire broke out in the one of the two Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) plants of the company, which has a capacity of 60,000 tonnes per annum. The plant was shutdown on June 5th for routine maintenance when the incident took place.
The other LLDPE plant with 1,00,000 tpa capcacity is fully operational. "Customer supplies will not be affected," said RIL in a statement.
"A thorough investigation has been ordered and is underway to establish the exact cause of the incident. The rest of the Nagothane complex is continuing with normal operations," it added.
Agency reports however said that 35 people were injured in the explosion.
