Bangalore-based Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospitals Pvt Ltd (NHHPL) will be soon partnering the Assam government to set up a Rs 150 crore super-speciality hospital in Amingoan, near Guwahati. The Assam government on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NHHPL to set up the project under public-private-partnership mode (PPP) mode.
It will be a 300-bedded hospital and the Assam government would contribute around Rs 55 crore for the project. The proposal to set up such a super-speciality hospital was announced by chief minister Tarun Gogoi in his budget speech of 2011-12, following which a request for proposal (RFP) was prepared and NHHPL was selected as the private partner through a transparent bidding process.
According to the MoU signed, not less than 50 per cent of all beds (including different wards and ICU, ITU, ICCU among others) shall have to be charged at 1.85 per cent below Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) rates. The same would also apply on OPD and diagnostics also. The state government will be setting up a monitoring committee to monitor the execution of commitments made by NHHPL.
Terming it as a “significant milestone” in the history of heath department of Assam, state’s health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said: “There is a real possibility of transforming Guwahati into a hub and today’s step is a real step in that direction.”
He said the hospital will come as a boon for patients of other North Eastern states, as well as for neighbouring country Bhutan and Bangladesh.
The hospital will have super-specialty facilities such as cardiology, cardiac surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, besides other services such as nephrology, dialysis, urology and renal transplant, orthopaedics and trauma, endocrinology, radiology and imaging services, internal medicine etc.

“Our desire is to start with a 300 bedded hospital but the intention is to build a health city with 2,000 to 5,000 beds. Our health city in Bangalore has 3,000 beds. It’s soon going to touch 5,000 beds. Our target is to reach 10,000 beds. We want the same thing to happen here as in whole eastern India there is no such centre providing affordable health care,” said Devi Prasad Shetty, chairman of NHHPL.
Shetty said presently the group has 14 hospitals in India, spread across 11 cities.
