Nathpa Jhakri project, the country’s largest hydro-electric project in Himachal Pradesh, has crossed the target of 6,000 MU of power generation.

“This is 178 MU more than the targets of MoU provided by the power ministry under excellent category. The target was due to be achieved on December 12, 2010,” said R P Singh, electrical director, SJVNL, the company that owns and runs the 1,500 Mw Nathpa project.

“This record has been achieved despite the high silt levels in the Sutlej river which forced shutting down of the project for 22 days in July and August this year,” Singh said.

In the last financial year the project achieved a record 7,019 Mw of power generation which is 407 MU more than the design energy of 6,612 MU. In the current financial year the target is 6,700 MU of electricity.

The power station has so far generated 42,180 MU during the last seven years of its coming into commercial generation.

The project feeds the power hungry northern grid which feeds all the states and union territories in northern India.
