Tata Engineering, having already unveiled an improved diesel version of the Indica, is now planning to repeat the act with the launch of an improved Indica 2000, the petrol version of the small car, by end-September.

This, according to senior company officials, is aimed at improving sales of the car by addressing the problems in the original petrol version and redressing customer complaints.

The pricing of the new petrol version of the car could, however, not be ascertained.

Sales of the Indica 2000 currently account for about 15-20 per cent of the total sales of the car, while V2 (the diesel version) sales account for a majority of the total sales.

Sales of the Indica improved vastly after the launch of the Indica V2 in January this year. Dealers of Tata Engineering in Mumbai confirmed that the number of customer complaints have reduced since the launch of the V2.

However, the company's presence in cars with petrol engines was weak so far, thereby necessitating the launch of an improved variant of the Indica 2000, a local dealer said.

Auto analysts at a local brokerage firm said: "In the petrol-engine space, the Indica faces stiff competition from Maruti's models and the Santro. Since most passenger car sales come from the petrol versions, it is essential that the quality of the petrol Indica is upgraded," they said.
