After having turned down the proposal of Torrent Power Ltd (TPL) to raise power tariff rates, Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) today directed Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (erstwhile Gujarat Electricity Board) and its affiliate power utilities to keep power tariffs unchanged and continue to levy existing tariff rates.

The regulator today issued the order asking state power companies to keep the electricity tariff unchanged. As major part of the year 2009-10 has already elapsed, GERC has also asked the power companies to file power tariff petitions for the year 2010-11 by 15 December, 2009. "Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited (GETCO) produced 28,388 million units as against the multi year tariff plan estimate of 29,949 million units," an official release said.

Last week, GERC had decided not to revise power tariff rates as proposed by TPL, which distributes power in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Surat. GERC's move to keep the tariffs unchanged was a major respite to its 21 lakh customers.
