NTPC bottomline rises 67%

National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC) has recorded a 66.70 per cent jump in net profit to Rs 1,365.5 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2004 compared with Rs 819.1 crore for the same quarter previous fiscal.
 
Turnover has increased from Rs 5,362.6 crore in the third quarter of 2003-04 against Rs 5,698.2 crore in the third quarter this fiscal.
 
Company officials attributed the increase to improved efficiency and new capacity addition. The 67 per cent net increase was in spite of pruning of return on equity to 14 per cent as per the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission guidelines, they said.
 
In the first nine months of the fiscal, the company reported a net profit after tax of Rs 3,513.6 crore, which was 9.5 per cent below the net profit of Rs 3884.9 crore reported in the corresponding period in 2003.
 
However, the company said that excluding for the adjustments for net sales, other income and rebate under the one-time settlement scheme, the comparable net profit figure for the first nine months of 2003-04 was Rs 2,647.2 crore. In the first nine months of the fiscal, turnover was Rs 16,139.5 crore against Rs 13,637.6 crore in the corresponding period last fiscal.
 
"We have added 1000 mw during the last nine months. Plant load factor has further improved and these have contributed to the financial performance," C P Jain, CMD said.
 
The company has also scaled up its capacity addition target for the 11th Plan to 17,000 mw against the existing target of 11,000 mw.
