Public sector power major National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is targeting a combined power generation capacity of almost 10,000 Mw in Uttar Pradesh by 2017.
At present, the total installed capacity of NTPC stands at roughly 5,500 Mw in UP.
“By the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan (2012-17), our total installed capacity will touch 10,000 Mw,” NTPC Executive Director (North) I B Pandey said here.
NTPC has 20 power generation units at Singrauli, Rihand, Unchahar and Tanda in the state. Two units of 500-Mw each are being added at Rihand that will be commissioned by 2012, he informed.
The capacity addition envisaged during 2012-17 includes Singrauli (Stage III, 500 Mw), Tanda (Stage II, 2x660 Mw), Meja (2x660 Mw) and Unchahar (Stage IV, 500 Mw).
Meja unit is being planned in a 50:50 joint venture with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL). Besides, a 2x4 Mw hydro project and a 25-Mw solar thermal project are also in the pipeline.

The stations of Unchahar and Rihand figure among the top 10 stations in the country in terms of Plant Load Factor (PLF). NTPC also has 2 gas-based plants in Auraiyya (652 Mw) and Dadri (817 Mw) aggregating 1,469 Mw.
Commenting on green technologies in the power sector, Pandey said all new plants were being equipped with fuel efficient machines to cut carbon emissions.
“Besides, the existing plants are being upgraded to cut on emissions. However, there would not be significant effect on tariffs,” he underlined.
The total ash generated in the northern region stations during 2009-10 was about 9.6 million tonnes. Of this, 7.5 million tonnes was utilised in various areas, such as landfill/waste land development, manufacturing of asbestos sheets, manufacturing of cement, brick making, embankments, use in agriculture etc.
Meanwhile, NTPC is exploring the possibility of setting up a thermal power plant in the arid region of Bundelkhand in UP.
“We are waiting for water and land allocation for the plant, that would be set up wholly by NTPC,” he added.
