NTPC today signed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Grid Corporation of Orissa (Gridco) for sale of power from its proposed projects at Darlipali and Talcher Thermal Expansion in Orissa, Katwa in West Bengal and Pirpainti and Muzaffarpur Stage II in Bihar to be commissioned during the 12th plan period (2012-2017).
A separate PPA was signed for Farakka Stage III in West Bengal. The project is to be commissioned in the current fiscal.Darlipali (3200 MW), Talcher Thermal Expansion (1320 MW), Katwa (1600 MW), Pirpainti (1320 MW) and Farakka Stage III (500 MW) are being developed by NTPC, while Muzaffarpur Stage II (2 x 195 MW) is being implemented by subsidiary company of NTPC in JV with Bihar State Electricity Board. Eastern Region states will be beneficiary of entire power from these projects.
The agreements were signed by V K Padha, General Manager (Commercial) and D Bhattacharya, Chief Executive Officer of Kanti Bijli Utpadan Nigam Ltd (KBUNL), a joint venture between NTPC and Bihar State Electricity Board and A C Mallick, Director (Commercial), Gridco.
Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, the state energy minister; P K Jena, the state energy secretary, Hemant Sharma, managing director, Gridco; K K Sharama, regional executive director (East-II) of NTPC and R K Srivastava, general manager (Talcher Thermal) of NTPC were present on the occasion.
NTPC is setting up a 3200 Mw power plant at Gajamara and 4800 Mw power plant at Darlipalli.
The proposed super thermal power projects of NTPC at Gajamara and Darlipalli were scheduled to be operational by 2016-17. The Gajamara project needs 2900 acres of land and NTPC claims to have conducted the gram sabhas for this project in March this year.

The 4800 MW power plant coming up on around 3000 acres of land at Darlipalli will be commissioned in three phases. In each phase, 1600 MW (2x800) will be commissioned and all the three phases are scheduled to go on stream by the end of the 12th Plan period (2016-17).
One of the conditions set by the state government for signing of the PPA was the setting up of a medical college and a power engineering institute. The second condition was allocation of 50 per cent power for the state from the two proposed super thermal power stations.NTPC has sought 15 acres of land from the Orissa government to set up a medical college in the state. The locations and other specifics of the medical college and power engineering institute are yet to be finalized.
