ONGC tops PSU profit list, Air India worst performer

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) retained the top position on the coveted list of 10 most profit-making PSUs, while Air India was the biggest loss-making state firm during 2010-11, according to a government survey.

ONGC, the country's largest oil and gas producer, earned a net profit of Rs 18,924 crore during the fiscal. Air India, on the other hand, suffered losses of Rs 6,865 crore in the same period.

Power major NTPC moved to the second rank among the top 10 profit making PSUs, pushing Indian Oil Corporation down to the third position, according to the Public Enterprises Survey. In the previous survey, IOC was at the second position.

Largest iron ore producer NMDC was fourth, while BHEL ranked fifth. Maharatna company SAIL fell down to the sixth position, from fourth in the earlier ranking.

Coal India, Gail and Oil India took seventh, eighth and ninth positions, respectively.

Power Grid Corporation of India made entry into the coveted club at 10th position, while Power Finance Corporation was pushed out of the list.

Among other firms making huge losses were telecom PSUs MTNL and BSNL; Hindustan Photo Films Manufacturing, Fertiliser Corporation of India and Hindustan Cables.
