Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) has halted production at one of its power units having 210 Mw capacity due to technical snag in its boiler unit. As its other unit having similar capacity is out of production since 5 July because of annual maintenance, power production at the state-run generator came to zero since last night.

“The boiler of Unit One developed a leakage in the tube on Saturday night. We are trying to fix the problem by Monday morning, “said Venkatachalam Kuppusamy, managing director, OPGC.

OPGC produces 420 Mw power from two of its coal-fired power stations situated at Banharpali in Jharsuguda district. These plants were set up in 1995 and often face maintenance problems. OPGC is investing heavily to upgrade these plants along with plans to increase capacity by establishing more power units.

The state load despatch centre (SLDC) which tracks and monitors power supply from different generator in the state, showed zero power supply from state-owned PSU. However, there will not be major supply problem due to OPCG power shortage as the state is getting sufficient supply from hydro generation these days due to more than normal rainfall this monsoon.
