Oracle and Dell announced a strategic alliance that will provide customers a one-stop solution and a single point of contact for computing requirements. This will benefit those companies that are contemplating a migration to the Linux operating system.

Customers can now deploy Oracle products on Dell servers running on Linux, said Dinesh Pai, general manager, Dell India.

According to IDC's latest research, Linux Migration Multi-Client Study covering 2,600 companies across eight countries, most major verticals were planning to deploy the Linux platform over the next few years. Currently, 27 per cent of companies surveyed have deployed Linux on their infrastructure while 47 per cent are evaluating.

Citing the study, officials at Dell said key adoption factors for deployment of Linux depended on availability of applications, tools and stability of the platform. The strategic alliance between Dell and Oracle is slated to meet these pre-requisites.

This partnership builds into the global sales agreement. The system was presented as a fully integrated solution that can scale growing businesses at a lower cost of ownership, said Pai.

He added that the alliance will lower the total cost of ownership and will offer 69 per cent faster processing, with the bundling of Oracle's 10g data software application and the Dell PowerEdge server.

At present, Oracle is certified on Dell PowerEdge servers and these are available in India with Oracle pre-installed from the factory. The factory integration reduces errors due to manual installations, according to Shekhar Dasgupta, managing director, Oracle India.
