In a move that would boost the paper industry, the prestigious G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology has joined hands with the Kumaon-based Century Pulp and Paper (CPP) Ltd.
The university will provide technical help to the paper mill in terms of plantations, processing, ecological conservation, and increase in productivity, said Dr B S Bist, Vice Chancellor of the Pantnagar-based university.
After a meeting with President of Century pulp and paper V D Bajaj and other officials of the company, Bist said, “During the current year as many as one million trees will be planted on wastelands, degraded lands, lands unfit for agriculture and on marginal lands aiming at providing raw material as per the requirement of the paper industry.
He said, “a series of eco-friendly projects will be prepared by research students mainly from engineering, management and environmental science streams which would help the farmers in diversifying their plants. This would also generate employment opportunities for the youth of the Kumaon area.
Bist informed that mono cultures must be replaced by biodiversity cultivation as the mono cultures inject vulnerability into ecosystems.
He also discussed the possibilities of supply of stationery materials from the paper mill on concessional rates which will be in favour of university.
