Philip Healthcare today said it will set up 130 sleep labs in various hospitals and clinics in the country by the end of 2010, besides creating awareness about sleep disorders and the problems related to it.
Philips, which had acquired US-based firm Respironics Inc through its subsidiaries, is now introducing the complete range of sleep-related solutions from the US company's portfolio in the country. Sleep labs have a set of diagnostic equipment which are needed to find out the exact cause of sleep disorders.
"There is almost no awareness about the sleep-related disorders in the country and Philips as company would be the first to initiate such campaigns in India," Philips Healthcare Chief Executive Officer Anjan Bose told reporters today.
He said, the company has now decided to set up 30 sleep labs by the end of the current year in various hospitals in Delhi and Mumbai. By the end of next year, the total number of sleep labs would be increased to 130.
"We are also talking to various private hospital chains like Apollo and Fortis for setting up the lab as well as to create awareness in the country about sleep related disorders in the country," Bose said while declining to give details regarding the projected sales revenue and investments.
He said, lack of sleep not only impacts the overall quality of life but also leads to serious health issues such as increased risk of diabetes, weight gain, high blood pressure and irregular heart beats.
Bose said, Philips has also carried out a nationwide survey which revealed that almost 93 per cent Indian suffer from sleep disorders.
Philips Healthcare, a subsidiary of Netherlands-based Royal Philips Electronics, sells and distributes medical equipment in the country and it contributes around Rs 500 crore to over all sales of the company in India.
