The Central Institute of Plastic and Engineering and Technology (CIPET), an autonomous institute under the Union ministry of chemicals & fertilisers, has plans to open three state-of-the-art institutes in Panipat, Jaipur and Maharastra (location not yet decided yet), with initial project cost of Rs 20.5 crore. |
The project is partly funded by the state government and partly by the central government. |

These institutes, most probably, will be operational in 2008, would cater for the growing demand of the skilled workforce in the country. CIPET has only one institute in the northern region, based at Amritsar, which caters for demand of skilled workforce to the states of Haryana, Punjab, Himachal and Jammu & Kashmir. |

This was disclosed by Sushil K verma, Director General, CIPET who was in the city recently. Speaking to Business Standard, Verma on phone said," The consumption of plastic in 1990 was about 1 million tonnes annually and it has grown almost five times. |

As per present scenario, is concerned, the consumption of plastic in the country is around 4.8 million tonnes annually and is expected to touch 12.5 million tonnes by 2010. |

He added further by 2010, seeing the surge in demand there is expectation that about 30,000 units would be in operational. |

He said that, according to vision paper produced by the plastic industry in the country there was a tremendous growth potential with large number of automobile, FMCG, packaging, medical and healthcare giants putting up manufacturing units in the country which would propel higher growth rate for the plastic segment in the coming years. |

He said that the CIPET, has plans to add highly prestigious institute with latest infrastructure at Panipat, Jaipur and Maharastra. The Centre would also cater to neighbouring stats of Delhi and Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir. |

Presently the institute at Panipat is run on rented accommodation and have intake capcity of 60-90 students. The new institutes is likely to be operational in full swing by 2008 and would have intake capcity of 300 students. The institute at Panipat would be spread over 12 acres. |

He informed that states of Rajasthan and Maharastra governments have given a go ahead to set up centre, in these respective states. He added that the Rajashtan and Haryana government already allotted a land at Jaipur and Panipat and the construction would start shortly. |

He further added that, Haryana, soon have Plastic Engineering Park, spread over 600 acres, in the vicinity of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) refinery at Panipat, once operational, this park is expected to give boost to the plastic industry in the region. |

He further said IOC was going ahead with the establishment of petrochemical complex for producing different variety of polymers and other range of plastic demand in the north India. |
