Video conferencing services company Polycom is betting big on the increasing telecom penetration in India and the greater availability of bandwidth to expand its operations. |
Polycom's country manager for India and SAARC Yugal Sharma told Business Standard that the company is focussing its efforts on western India as major Indian as well as international corporates are making or expanding their investments in this region. |

Sharma said that the company has about 150 active customers today "" a number which is expected to double this year. |

"With 2 mbps speed of telecommunications traffic becoming commonplace, we see a sharp rise in demand for the videoconferencing service," Sharma said adding videoconferencing will be prefered over other options like internet video chats for the quality and reliability it offers. |

In keeping with the target of doubling its customers in 2007, Polycom is increasing its field and sales staff in the region, Sharma informed. |

The headcount for Polycom in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Goa is set to double, he said. |

Sharma said that the state governments' initiatives in e-governance such as State Wide Area Networks (WANS) will give a major fillip to Polycom's business as it has demonstrated the capability of its services in some states already. |

The states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand are gearing up to create SWANs to connect villages with the district and state headquarters "" a project where Polycom will play a major role as technology provider, he elaborated. |

Polycom has in place tie-ups with broadband telecom majors including Airtel, BSNL or Sify for offering videoconferencing to the corporate segment. |

The "go to market" strategy shared by Polycom with Reliance is also showing impressive results as the network of Reliance Webworld is expanding fast, mustering a greater response from retail consumers, he explained. |
