Power generation hit as OPGC's Unit-2 develops snag

OPGC runs two units of thermal power with a capacity of 210 mw each in the IB Valley

The power production at the Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) IB thermal power station in Jharsuguda district has been hit due to  leakage in the boiler tube of Unit -2 with capacity of 210 mw (megawatt).

“The power generation has been stopped from Saturday evening after a leakage has been detected in the boiler tube of Unit-2,” said a top OPGC official.

The unit is likely to be synchronized by evening, added the official.

It may be noted, OPGC runs two units of thermal power with a capacity of 210 mw each in the IB Valley. The entire generation from OPGC is committed to the state transmission utility GRIDCO on the basis of a long term power purchase agreement.

OPGC , presently, is planning to add another 1,320 mw to its capacity. The expansion project which involved adding two units of 660 mw is taken up at a cost of around Rs 10,000 crore during the 12th Plan (2012-17) period.

The public sector undertaking has been allotted two coal blocks, namely Manoharpur and Dip-side Manoharpur in Sundergarh district.
