Central electricity distribution firm PowerGrid would sign an agreement with Bangladesh later next month for setting up a transmission link with the neighbouring country.
"A formal MoU with Bangladesh government would be signed on our visit next month between February 17 and 20," Chairman and Managing Director PowerGrid S K Chaturvedi told PTI.
The financial modalities regarding the transmission link are yet to discussed, he said.
The two countries inked an MoU on cooperation in the power sector for exchange of electricity to the tune of over 900 million units per annum depending on the availability, need and price, following the meeting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday.
"However, the quantum of investment is yet to be ascertained, this transmission link between the two countries would entail an investment of over half a billion dollars," Bangladesh Power Development Board Chairman A S M Alamgir Kabir had told PTI here on the sidelines of the 3rd Japan-SAARC Energy Symposium last week.
Once this transmission link becomes operational Bangladesh would be able to exchange power from Indian grids in West Bengal and Tripura.
