Powerwave to add 100 staff at its Hyd R&D lab

Powerwave Technologies R&D India, a unit of California-based electronics products company of the same name, plans to recruit 100 engineers for its Indian operations by the end of 2011, to add to its existing headcount of 250.

The Hyderabad facility, which opened in June 2008, focuses on design of wireless telecom products, and recently won the 'Best Startup Indian Company' award for the year 2009 -10 awarded by ITSAP (IT and ITeS Industry Association of Andhra Pradesh) at the Advantage AP meet.

The 54,000-sft facility includes labs for advanced test instrumentation, environmental screening capabilities, and indoor antenna test range. The company said in a press release that its extensive use of simulation and analysis tools like Matlab, Solid Works and CAD tools for PCB (printed circuit board) layout delivers designs that work the first time.

Powerwave Technologies R&D India has a collaboration programme with Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), where the Powerwave Centre of Excellence is engaged in research on upcoming technologies in the wireless space. The company also runs an advanced research programme jointly with BITS to develop intellectual property with the latter’s PhD scholars.

As part of infrastructure expansion at the facility, a world-class prototype shop will be created this year to enable quick design turnaround.

According to Powerwave vice president (global engineering)Ezmarai Arbab, its products and solutions are used by operators around the globe, including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint in North America, Vodafone, Orange, Bouygues Telecom, Raycom, Telefonica in Europe, and several in the Asia-Pacific region.
